General description of the collection: The John W. Earle papers consist of a memoir, reports and newspaper clippings. Included are letters to family members and reports to commanding officers discussing plans and actions of the Special Services. The newspaper clippings pertain to post-war duties of his regiment and planned the 40-year United States-Russian reunion in Steyr, Austria. The collection also consists of photocopied pictures of Earle's regiment and letters surrounding possible involvement of President Ronald Reagan in the reunion. Within the collection, Earle discusses Allied strategy for assault on the Rhine, and tasks and responsibilities of SSOs. He recounts the United States-Soviet Union meeting on 8 May 1945 and emphasizes the Russian role in the war.

First Lieutenant (1LT) John W. Earle enlisted on 2 June 1942. He was assigned to the 14th Infantry Regiment, 71st Division. Early served with the Regiment as a Special Services Officer (SSO), initially at Fort Davis, Panamal Canal Zone, and later at Hunter Ligget, CA and Fort Benning, GA. In January, 1945, Earle and his regiment were ordered to France to join in the assault on the Rhine. After the war, he continued his duties in Austria and later in Germany until 16 July 1946.
